The batteries in your camera are often an afterthought. They are there and you really don’t think about it until your camera dies. This is an excellent article to help you understand how your camera uses battery power and ways to extend the life of your photographic outing. All it takes is running out of power once and losing a once in a lifetime photo and you’ll be paying more attention!

Like any beast that needs feeding, your digital camera is hungry…for power. It requires a constant supply of charged batteries to provide you with the photographs you desire. But to many, once the batteries have been popped in, they are forgotten about – until they let you down and you are left feeling frustrated. This digital photography for beginners article looks at the importance of the battery and some handy tips for conserving energy, if necessary.

The most obvious tip is this – always have a spare battery (or set) to hand at all times. There is nothing more annoying than having a wonderful photographic opportunity in front of you (such as a beautiful once in a lifetime sunset) which you can only stand by and watch. And all because your camera’s battery is flat. Believe me, you’ll feel flat, too. If you are using an external flash unit, make sure you have the appropriate batteries for this to hand, as well.

Depending on how you use your camera, the length of battery life will vary. If you get into trouble, and are unable to quickly charge your battery, or get to a store to obtain new ones, there are a few energy-conserving steps you can take which may prolong your battery power enough for you to get your shot. Or you can simply use these tips ongoing to prolong your battery’s life.

Using your monitor to view pictures is one of the biggest drains on power, and one area of digital photography for beginners that can be a hard habit to break. Therefore, try not to review your pictures until you have new batteries inserted. If you are not using the monitor to take the pictures, turn it off, even if you need to leave the camera itself powered up.

Check out you camera’s auto turn off function. Most modern digital cameras have a feature that automatically shuts the camera down after a certain period of inactivity. In many cases, this is adjustable, so you may be able to reduce the amount of inactive time before shutdown.

The built in flash unit also consumes much power. If flash recycle time starts to slow down, this is usually a sign of impending doom (or battery failure, to be less dramatic). Limiting flash by ensuring your auto flash option is off, and using available light, will help.

If your camera has Image Stabilisation, some models will conserve battery power when this is turned off. This does vary, though, so check your camera’s manual to see if this applies.

Many cameras offer continuous autofocus as an option. In this case, the focus is being altered constantly whilst the shutter is being depressed. Some battery power may be preserved by switching to regular autofocus, or manual focus, such as on a Digital SLR.

Whilst the subject of batteries can easily be taken for granted, you should consider these as vital as any aspect of digital photography for beginners. You only need to be let down by dud batteries once to realize how important they are. In short, keep spare batteries with you at all times, and you will never go far wrong.

Photoshop is a complex program, but anyone can learn how to use it and master is. You just have to know where to start. I think the best way to do it is to just begin playing with the program. Double click on the program icon, get in there and have a look around. Open the drop menus, look at the different toolbars, just click on everything to get a feel for where things are. Then you can delve deeper with a few options.

First of all, there are books. The different Photoshop programs are CS, CS1, CS2, CS3 and CS4; Photoshop Elements 6, 7 and 8 (the older ones are practically obsolete) and Photoshop Premier Elements; Photoshop Lightroom 1 and 2; and finally, Photoshop Extended. There are books that are for the specific program listed and when I typed Photoshop into Amazon.com, I got over 9,000 results. It’s not necessary to buy a book, but you can. There is a free PDF file of the first chapter of a book entitled Photoshop CS Visual QuickStart Guide. Honestly, for a Photoshop newbie, this free chapter is a great start as it gives you a glimpse of what you need to learn.

Also, when you buy a Photoshop program, it comes with reading material that I suggest you at least browse through. Because Photoshop is so complex, there are a lot of features that you can learn to maximize what you get out of the program. Not taking advantage of the reading material, usually leads to ignored tools that you could have used to make things easier.

So, you’ve read up a bit about Photoshop and are ready for a test drive. All of these programs have similar basics; file, edit, image, layer, select, filler, view, window and help drop menus as well as different toolbars and tool boxes. I list these things so that you know to look for these items when you are playing with the program.

Tutorials, there are a lot of tutorials on the Adobe website that can take you through Photoshop’s features. Just to let you know, some tutorials are not free, but can be accessed when you buy the specific product they are for. As for free tutorials, you’ll definitely want to take advantage of tutorials that specifically teach you how to navigate the main tool box. This is what you will use to select items, crop images, add text, use the pen and the brush, alter your color palette, clone parts of an image, blur edges, erase things and so much more. One of the most important things you can learn is how to work with layers. Anytime you alter your image, you should put the changes in a new layer so you can go back and fix things one layer at a time as opposed to fixing the whole thing.

Finally, there’s the Adobe resource center and forums. The resource center has tons of links for any obstacle you might run into. The resource center and forums allow you to advance your learning and find specific answers to obscure questions you may have as your Photoshop abilities grow.

Overall, play with your program, read up on its features, experiment with photos, practice with tutorials and most importantly have fun. Now that you know where to look for the information that you need to begin your long-term relationship with Photoshop, you can focus on creating a new world for your pictures, videos, sound recordings, web pages and any other thing you may want to do.

For anyone who loves taking pictures, it’s worth while getting acquainted with photo editing software as they can make a big difference with how your pictures turn out.

Photo editing software to a digital photographer is what the darkroom is to a film photographer. The big difference with photo editing software is that anyone can do it without the cost of setting up a darkroom.

And with photo editing software, you can do standard image editing functions like cropping and adjusting color, and can also do photo manipulation.

Image editing refers to all changes that are made to a photograph. Photo manipulation refers to what film shutterbugs used to call “trick photography” – switching backgrounds and such. (For some fun examples of photo manipulation, look up the “National Geographic Photo Foolery” page online.)

Once you know the type of image editing you want to do, you will be better able to choose a photo editor. In this article, we’ll highlight the most popular ones:

Picasa

A free photo editor from Google. If you are just starting to learn the digital photography basics, then this will serve you well for a while. It is really designed to be more of an online photo album or photo manager but can also handle basic photo editing. Picasa offers basic types of editing tools like retouching so you can remove blemishes, scratches or other types of imperfections. Like many photo editors it has red eye remover. It also has some fun functionality where you can create screensavers with your photos and even integrate them with Google Earth.

If you are ready to advance from the digital photography basics and do more with your pictures, then you should consider one of the following photo editors:.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 8

The market leader in photo editing and manipulation, it’s more user-friendly and less costly (approximately $90) than its big brother, Photoshop CS5. It’s perfect for a photographer enthusiast and you should be able to try it for free using the trial version.

Adobe Photoshop CS5

This has everything a professional photographer or graphic artist needs. It sells for approximately $700 on their site, but it’s offered for half that by some vendors and may offer a free trial version.

Paint Shop Pro

This is a direct competitor of Photoshop Elements and also costs about $90. They also offer a free 30-day trial.

The GIMP

An odd name for such a powerful program, the acronym stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program. This open source software, also called freeware, continues to get better and has a strong community of users in case you need assistance. It is available for Windows (NT4, 2000/XP/Vista), Mac Operating Systems (OS X) and even Unix/Linux platforms. It doesn’t quite have everything that you get with Adobe Photoshop CS4, but it has more than Elements or Paint Shop Pro and is used by some professionals.

No matter what photo editor you have, read through the guide or help sections so you understand what you can do with it.

It takes time to learn but you will be impressed with what you can do with your images.

For example, here are a just a few of the things you can accomplish (the top 5 even with just Picasa):

* Crop

* Resize

* Lighten or darken shadows, highlights, and midtones

* Correct Colors

* Remove blemishes, a stray branch, a logo, or anything else you don’t want in the picture

* Blur Backgrounds (Photoshop Elements, Paintshop Pro and The GIMP all offer background-blurring applications. Picasa can’t do this.)

You can also create all sorts of special effects with a photo editor. You can do all kinds of creative things with photo editing software such as turning your photo into an impressionistic painting. You can turn a color photo into black and white to capture the tones, lines and highlights without the distraction of color. Or for a more vintage or antique look, you can choose sepia.

Even if you don’t want to do any cool special effects, learning the basics of any photo editor will let you fix “mistakes” in your photos. Just cropping alone can do wonders if you couldn’t get a close enough shot or you’ve got too much clutter in the picture. For these reasons image editing is part of just about any digital photography basics course or book you might find. Before you know it, you will be editing and producing quality images perfect for framing on your wall.

In this digital age, photography has made significant leaps forward. However, when I began taking SLR photographs, film was the only option. This had advantages – especially as I needed to make every picture count. There was nothing more disappointing than picking up photos from the developers, only to find that 50% (or more) were inadequate. I had to learn – and quickly – if I wanted to improve the ratio. This I did, and the skills I gathered keep me in good stead to this day. However, if I were in a similar position now, I would learn via a decent online digital photography course.

Whilst I took time to learn how to compose pictures properly, develop a "photographer’s eye" and which settings to use in any particular situation, there were aspects of film photography that were of little interest to me. Mainly this was the darkroom. I got my kicks from creating the image – the processing and development were somebody else’s area of expertise. However, the "digital darkroom" equivalent, of editing images in Photoshop and equivalent, does excite me, and opened up a whole new world of creativity that had previously not existed to me.

So digital has now made photography much more accessible from end to end. Those who want to concentrate on just taking photos and sharing them can do so. Those who prefer to edit and improve images to create works of art can do this. And others, like myself, can combine the two. A credible online digital photography course can teach you how to do all of this.

So how do you choose a course suitable for you? How do you know if it is pitched at your level? Well, increasingly, online courses cater for all photographers, whatever their level of experience. A good course will have a "one size fits all" element to it, and the pupil can start where they want. The course will go right from the basics (e.g. composition, automatic aperture and shutter speed settings) through to training and assignments for advanced users (covering such areas as light and dynamic range, and studio portrait set-ups).

Such an online digital photography course will also provide video tutorials, as well as access to monthly ezines that give you a chance to submit photos for critique and enter competitions. Ideally, there will be a level of interaction that you could not achieve just by reading a book on the subject. This would include access to the tutor, who will provide objective feedback and be there to answer any questions. Finally, but importantly, online courses provide excellent value for money. As all content is downloadable, the tutor has very low overheads, which they can pass on directly to the consumer.

Discover how easy it is to take memorable photographs simply by following an online digital photography course. Please check out http://www.photographycourseonline.info for further information.

If you love taking pictures of animals then this article will be sure to give you some practical tips that you can immediately start using. Animal photography, also called wildlife photography, encompasses the entire world of animals from your pets to polar bears. This article focuses on photographing wildlife, but you can apply many of these tips to photographing Muffin or Fido. To learn how nature photographers get those fantastic images of wildlife, read on…

The basics to taking great wildlife pictures start with these tips. As always there are exceptions, but the following go a long ways towards ensuring successful animal photography:

- Always use natural light to your advantage.

- Fill the frame with the subject.

- Focus on the eyes.

- Shoot from various angles.

- Capture personality.

Perhaps you are wondering how you can, without a humongous lens and SLR safely get close enough to a wild animal to "capture personality" or "fill the frame"?

Actually even professional wildlife photographers don’t always take their winning photographs in the wild. Most of the wonderful pictures you see of wolves, polar bears and other wild creatures were taken at wildlife sanctuaries and zoos. Cheating? Maybe, but it’s safer for the photographer and doesn’t disturb their free roaming cousins’ mating and feeding cycles.

Some of the wildlife sanctuaries give special photo tours but if that’s not possible, there are many things you can do to get professional quality photos with a compact camera.

Animal Photography Tips for Wildlife Sanctuaries and Zoos

1) Simplify the Composition

If the background is distracting, use a wide aperture or Portrait mode to blur it. Or, you can use a photo editor like Photoshop to clean up or blur the background.

2) Go Natural

Avoid showing cage bars, fences, humans, signs, etc. If it is safe and abides by the rules, point the lens through a gap in the fence so you can take the photo without the fence showing. Sometimes there will be a vantage point that allows you to shoot over the top of the fence. Look for these opportunities. Again, use a photo editor to blur what you couldn’t avoid when shooting the picture.

3) Fill the Frame

Use zoom (optical for best quality) or a telephoto lens to get close ups.

4) Sports Mode

Use Sports mode or set shutter speed priority to around 1/250 to freeze movements.

5) Use Light and Weather to Best Effect

Overcast days are often best for animal photography. If the overcast isn’t too bright, it will prevent glare from light colored or watery backgrounds. If the overcast is too dark and you have an SLR, raise the ISO. With the right amount of overcast, you can get well exposed, sharp pictures with your compact, and the animals won’t be squinting.

Since the eyes are the most expressive and the best place to focus, try to avoid any squinting. Another way to eliminate this is photograph when the animal’s back is to sun. In this case you will need to use fill flash (turn off automatic flash and set to "On") to prevent underexposure or a silhouette, and you will need to use a lens hood or wear a broad brimmed hat to prevent lens flare.

6) Try this When Shooting through Glass

When you want a picture of a terrarium or aquarium critter, turn on the flash and shoot from an angle. Make sure to check your camera manual for the safe distance when using the flash or you could damage an animals (or humans) eyes. Or, turn off the flash and carefully press the lens directly against the glass.

7) Plan your Visits for the Best Photo Ops

Others will especially love seeing your animal photography when it includes baby animals. Many times zoos and sanctuaries will let visitors know when new babies are expected. Another good photo op is feeding time. Animals that stay in hiding throughout much of the day will come out to eat. Finally, if you’re visiting a sanctuary or zoo when the weather’s hot, go early in the day when the animals will be most active, not napping.

 Use Context

While usually it’s best to fill the frame with the animal, sometimes the context is too interesting to bypass. Examples of using context: a child and baby animal looking at each other, a giraffe, long neck bent as it peers down at a car in front of yours at the drive-through safari park.

9) Capture Expressions

Animals, whether our pets or wildlife, make the cutest expressions. Be ready with your camera! Even just normal expressions like a wolf pup yawning or a tiger licking its lips are cute or interesting. The more you know about your favorite species, the better you’ll be able to capture those unforgettable pictures.

So, the next time you’re ready to take some wildlife pictures, use these animal photo tips and you’ll be amazed at the difference applying this tips can have on your photos.

Digital photography courses can cover a whole wide range of subjects. Remember that not all courses are up to the same standard, therefore it is very wise to investigate a course before you jump in especially if parting with your money, to make sure it will meet your expectations.

The cost of a digital photography training course can also be considerably varied. As to finding digital photography courses, you can try at your local college or community centres, also simply try a Google or Yahoo search for classes within your area, this should bring up results.

Typically an initial digital photography training course will start by teaching you all about your digital camera. Expect to lean photography terms such as aperture, exposure, f-stop, focal length, and depth of field that may sound totally foreign to you now, however should be explained in detail. Once definitions are covered, you would expect mechanics and functions to be covered in reasonable detail.

If you would like a real cost efficient and basic start to training, then why not look at online courses? These courses have the benefit of being either free or cheap and can easily fit within someones busy schedule.

The majority of people use their digital camera on fully automatic mode. This is usually fine if you are looking for standard, run of the mill pictures. However if you really wish to use your digital camera to its full capability, you’ll want to be taught what the different modes of your camera do and when to use them to best effect, this is a key topic most people will like to be covered in their courses.

Be aware that there is a lot of experimentation to be had. One of the best benefits of digital photography is that you don’t have to wait for pictures to be developed before you can see the results unlike traditional film cameras. When you take a picture with a digital camera you can of course see the results instantly. This is great for learning the effects that different techniques and settings have on the end result.

The benefit of the majority of digital photography training courses is that they often cover methods for digitally editing your pictures using popular photo editing software including free software which can be downloaded. Sharing pictures will also be covered on training courses as the majority of people obviously like to share their pictures.

If you decide to opt for a digital photography training course, rest assured that it will be time well spent and you will gain a lot from the experience.

Digital photography for beginners has never been so easy, no matter what type of camera you use. You now have the chance to create beautiful and stunning images in an instant.

Digital photography for beginners has never been so easy, no matter what type of camera you use. You now have the chance to create beautiful and stunning images in an instant. Gone are the days when you would need to leave your negatives at the chemist, only to pick them up a few days later and be disappointed with the results.

However, why stop there? These days, digital cameras are generally easy to use, but this can cause a problem. Automatic camera settings allow you to simply point and shoot. The fact is that the camera will take the photo it thinks you want – but the camera’s interpretation is not always what you intended, even when using the most expensive and complex SLR. Just think how rewarding it would be if you had complete control over every picture that you took.

With just a little training (and believe me it is not hard work) it is easily possible to produce results that look professional. Beginning with the basics, such as the correct way to hold your camera, through to the rules of composition, and understanding the optimum camera settings for each shot, can have a significant effect on your final creation. In fact, if you just LOOK like you know what you are doing, people ASSUME you do. After I first took proper training, I lost count of the number of times I struck up conversations with onlookers who thought I took photographs for a living! Digital photography for beginners can be great fun.

So what could you expect to learn from following a competent photography course? Examples include: -

* How to make your portrait subjects look relaxed, natural and confident * How to use creative lighting effects * How to take shots at night with crystal clear, sharp detail * How to make your pictures artistic by using the right composition * How to use your imagination to capture "arty" shots that no one else dares to take * How to make your black and white shots simply sensational * How to give your photographs a classic "yester-year" feel * How to know where and when to take the best landscapes.

Digital photography for beginners is no longer a daunting prospect, as it was in the days of traditional photography. Even within 2-3 weeks, anyone with some common sense and imagination can move quickly from complete novice to someone who can take professional style images.

If you enjoyed this Digital Photography For Beginners article, are interested in photography and would like to know how easy it can be to take truly stunning images, why not check out http://www.photographycourseonline.info for further information?

There are so many ways you can share your digital photos, but for those really great pictures you may want to print them out to enjoy. So, here are some basics to keep in mind when doing digital photography printing.

Besides framing and displaying your favorite photos, there are several other reasons why you would want to print out your photos. Here are just a few ways you can use printed pictures:

* Framed for the mantle, table and wall displays

* Posters

* Wallet pictures

* Memory books

* Greeting cards

* Photo crafts

* Photo competitions

Even in our digital day and age, we still have lots of interesting and beautiful things to do in print! But printing a photograph isn’t as easy as selecting "Print" on your computer. Printing a handout or flyer is a lot easier than printing a quality photograph. These digital photo printing tips will help you get better quality prints and hopefully make the process easier.

Digital Photography 101 – Pixels Matter

Before you resize a picture on your computer, figure out first if you may ever want to print it. If so, always keep a copy of the original.

Anytime you think you may want to print a picture that you take, make sure that the image is taken in high enough resolution. With so many digital cameras on the market, the best rule of thumb is to always set your camera on the highest resolution possible- this way you’ll always be able to print an image when you want and not be disappointed.

Using the proper settings on your printer is also important to getting a quality picture. Look at your camera manual or the manufacturers recommendations on their website. You can then use a photo editor to resample the pictures to the right dpi. If you’re new to digital photo printing, dpi stands for "dots per inch.". The more dots per inch, the finer the grain of the picture and the better it looks. The ink jet printers on the market today that are used for quality photo prints often have dpi resolution of around 1200 to 4800. This sort of dpi will produce quality prints of photographs that have around 140 to 300 pixels per inch.

Make sure that you understand that PPI, or pixels per inch, is the measurement for the photo resolution taken with your digital camera and not the height and width of the picture. For example a 200 pixel x 300 pixel photograph would be quite small, while a photo with a 300 ppi needn’t be small because ppi refers to the quality not the physical size of the picture.

Digital Photography 101 – Paper for Picture Perfect Prints

Make sure to use photo printing paper and if possible, use paper that is recommended by your printer’s manufacturer for best results. For projects like greetings cards, use special card stock paper. Both are sold at many office supply and crafts stores, as well as online.

If you need high quality prints or extra large pictures, you can also go to your local photography store or order them online from a reputable retailer.

Have fun printing your digital images!
